Africa-Press – Angola. The rescue operation for the victims of Wednesday’s accident on the Namibe-Huila Serra da Leba road, was completed early Thursday afternoon. A total of 50 people were affected, resulting in 22 deaths and 28 injuries.

According to José Catraio, the provincial commander of the Civil Protection and Fire Service, teams from the provinces of Huíla and Namibe were involved in the operation, which sped up the process.

He stated that the necessary forces and resources were on site and that the operation was successful despite the difficult access to the sloping area. All injured victims and deceased individuals were evacuated.

Catraio pointed out that, in addition to the eight previous victims at the precipice, another victim was located during the morning, bringing the total to nine. All nine victims have now been rescued, and the search is complete as the last victim, who was under the bus, has been rescued.

Catraio said the bus driver escaped unharmed and fled the scene.

Huila Governor Nuno Mahapi praised the team’s work rescuing the accident victims. Despite difficult working conditions, the team demonstrated commitment to their country and to a good life.

He stressed the need to continue providing medical assistance to those still hospitalized at Lubango Central Hospital.

Mahapi stated that work will continue to identify families who have not yet been contacted, and the local governments of Namibe and Huíla will provide all necessary support.
