Retrospective-2024: Huambo Sees Low Demand for Hotels

Africa-Press – Angola. Hotels, guesthouses and similar establishments in the province of Huambo are experiencing a drop in customers at the end of the year, as most people prefer to spend the holidays with family and friends.According to information obtained by Jornal de Angola, in a survey carried out yesterday, the occupancy rate only fluctuates between ten and fifteen percent of the installed capacity of hotel units, especially during this New Year’s Eve period, which is creating difficulties for operators in the sector.

According to its head of reception, Adérito Manuel, the Ekuikui Hotel, the leading hotel unit in the province, with a capacity of 70 rooms, has an occupancy rate of 15 percent.

During the interview, the receptionist explained that the main reason for the drop in hotel occupancy rates during this period is probably the tendency for people to spend more time with their families and friends.

The same scenario occurs at the Hotel Nino, in Cidade Baixa, where the person in charge of reception, Américo Jamba, said that the occupancy rate, from the 21st to the 31st of December, has been fluctuating between 10 and 15 percent and there is still no forecast for it to increase, because most guests are preferring to spend the end of the year on the country’s coast, especially in the provinces of Luanda, Benguela, Huíla and Namibe.

“During the festive season, there is always a fluctuation in the occupancy rate of hotels and guest houses, it is a slow pace that we are used to”, he lamented.

The price of the hotel chain varies according to the quality of each unit, with the lowest prices being around 9 thousand kwanzas and the highest being over 100 thousand kwanzas. The hotel chain is made up of eight hotels, 26 guesthouses, 42 guesthouses and three aparthotels, totaling 1,940 rooms, corresponding to 2,080 beds.
