Africa-Press – Angola. The President of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, paid tribute on Tuesday to the first President of Angola, António Agostinho Neto, by laying a wreath on the sarcophagus where his mortal remains rest, at the Agostinho Neto Memorial, in Luanda.During the visit to the Memorial, which was part of the official programme of the visit, the Tanzanian stateswoman, accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, toured the monument’s facilities, visiting the museum that displays personal objects of Agostinho Neto and the exhibition gallery with images of the main world leaders who spent time with the Founder of the Angolan Nation.
In the Book of Honour, the Tanzanian Head of State praised the role of the former Presidents of Angola, António Agostinho Neto and José Eduardo dos Santos, highlighting the contribution of both to the liberation of Africa and, in particular, of the Southern Region of the continent.
“They dedicated and committed their lives to the cause of freedom in their country and on the continent in general; and when freedom came, they strove to build harmony and peace throughout the world. Their spirit will live with us forever”, wrote the President of Tanzania. On the sidelines of the visit, the director of the Memorial, António Fonseca, highlighted the historical and political significance of the moment, recalling the bonds of solidarity between Angola and Tanzania in the context of the liberation struggles.
“It is highly symbolic, firstly, because Tanzania was one of the main rearguard supports in the National Liberation Struggle of Angola. President Samia Hassan in Dar-es-Salaam had already spoken about this historical relationship”, he said.
Tanzania, added the director of the Memorial, was a centre of logistical and intellectual support for our combatants, particularly those of the movement led by Agostinho Neto. “This symbolism is reborn with this visit”, he said.
António Fonseca also mentioned that the presence of the Tanzanian Head of State also reflects the strengthening of relations between African countries.
