The information was provided, in the city of Cuito, by the acting director of the Culture, Tourism, Youth and Sports Office, Neusa dos Santos, when speaking to the local press within the framework of the International Day for Monuments and Sites, which is celebrated yesterday.
The official underlined that the proposals for this purpose were already forwarded last year to the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Environment.
Bié also has 169 monuments and sites, most of which are degraded.
In 2022, the Evangelical Mission of Mouse of the “IECA” and the Monumento do Cuito Cemetery were elevated to National Historical-Cultural Heritage, which join the buildings of the Post Office, Barracks of Dragons (4th Division of the Angolan Armed Forces), Embala Ekovongo ( Cuito) and the evangelical missions of Chilesso and Catholic of Chicumbi, in the municipality of Andulo.
Neusa dos Santos appealed to Biena society to help preserve the province’s monuments and sites, so that tourism is boosted, as well as being able to serve populations and future generations with dignity.
The International Day for Monuments and Sites (DIMS) is celebrated annually on the 18th of April.
The event was created by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in 1982. The following year, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recognized the date at the 22nd General Conference.
The purpose of the date is to highlight the importance of monuments and sites in the history and identity of various peoples, as well as to call for their preservation and enhancement.
