Speaking about Neto’s legacy, in the context of the centenary of his birthday to be celebrated on the 17th of this month, some members of civil societ, considered it essential that the new generation should know, from a young age, the achievements of this national hero. .
For the executive secretary of the Provincial Youth Council (CPJ), Agnelo Ferreira Mucolo Alberto, Neto’s life and work are intertwined with the country’s recent history, as the first President of Angola gave himself body and soul to the liberation of its people.
“Neto’s life is linked to the resistance and liberation struggle against Portuguese colonialism to achieve the much-desired National Independence, on November 11, 1975”, he underlined, also highlighting the poetic, humanist and professional facet of the also known by Kilamba, recalling that Agostinho Neto was a doctor committed to the health of the people.
As a poet, according to the head of CPJ in Zaire, Manguxi used the pen and the voice as a weapon of combat, denouncing the atrocities of the colonizers: “Transmitting the legacy of Neto from generation to generation, in order to serve as an inspiration, is the best way to honor his memory.”
The same opinion is shared by History professor Afonso Nsambu Júnior, for whom Agostinho Neto was a first-rate humanist in inspiring the Angolan people to give their best for the liberation of other oppressed African peoples.
He recalled, on the occasion, the slogan of the “greatest poet”, according to which “in Namibia, Zimbabwe and South Africa is (va) the continuation of our struggle”. He advocated, therefore, the deepening of the study and its ideals in the academies, in order to cultivate and promote, more and more, the patriotic feeling among the new generation.
“Agostinho Neto was already shining a light on emancipation for many territories that were still under colonial rule on the African continent”, he recalled.
For the coordinator of the Nucleus of Traditional Authorities of Mbanza Kongo, Afonso Mendes, António Agostinho Neto is a high-profile figure who dedicated his life to the noble cause of the Angolan people.
According to the traditional authority, Neto has a legacy of honor, whose dimension transcends the borders of Angola. He recalled that Agostinho Neto was a leader with a political thought that included the concern to free all the peoples of the world, still subjected to oppression.
“President Agostinho Neto’s legacy must be reinforced in the contents of all levels of education in the country”, he said, for whom his teachings are a reference for the consolidation of peace, national unity and improvement of the living conditions of Angolans.
António Agostinho Neto was born on September 17, 1922, in the village of Kaxicane, Icolo e Bengo, and died on September 10, 1979, due to illness, in Moscow, capital of the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), now Russia. .
He is a reference of national culture, having written several works translated into several languages, especially “Quatro Poemas de Agostinho Neto”, in 1957, “Sagrada Esperança” (1974) and “A Renuncia Impossível” (1982). National on November 11, 1975.
