Africa-Press – Angola. Visual artist Maria Belmira Gumbe presents, on the 19th of this month, at Palácio de Ferro, a solo exhibition on the first day of the “Art Fair Luanda 2024”, in consideration of her achievements in the history of Angolan visual arts.
Organized by artistic events producer Maia Tanner, the inaugural edition of the fair will have the theme “From Angola to the World”, and will continue on the 20th and 21st, with the exhibition of visual artists from the galleries “The Art Affair”, ELA- Espaço Luanda Arte, Sky Gallery Espaço D’Arte, Tamar Golan and “This Is Not A White Cube.
In total, they hope to have the presence of 40 curators from the world of arts, who will show and discuss important issues related to the artistic circuit, with various themes such as “The Challenges of Galleries in Angola”, “The Need for an Art Museum”, “Formalization of Artistic Work for the National Economy” and “The Feminine in Art in Angola”.
According to the head of the artistic events producer, Dominick Maia Tanner, who spoke during a press conference held on Thursday at Palácio de Ferro, the fair aims to attract investment in artistic production, an important sector in social development and preservation of Angolan cultural identity.
The person in charge added that the objective is to create connections with artists, so that there is greater interaction between art makers.
Regarding the choice of theme, Africell’s partnership director, Mário de Nascimento, said that they intend to contribute to the arts in Angola, taking several artists abroad. “We want your work to be known”, he said.
The representative of The Art Affair gallery, Márcia Gonçalves, said that their proposal is to primarily embrace the challenges of national artists who intend to reach certain media and help them conquer the international market.
The fair focuses on promoting cultural tourism in Angola, valuing the work of visual artists and encouraging the consumption of works made in Angola.
The event has the support of Africell, the Africell Impact Foundation, the Provincial Government of Luanda and the Ministry of Culture, which together seek to make people understand that the promotion of art develops the Angolan identity.
Maria Belmira Gumbe has a postgraduate degree in Intangible Heritage from the Lusófona University of Lisbon. She has a degree in Cultural Studies from the Fernando Pessoa University of Porto, Portugal, and has several academic works. The artist was director of the National Museum of Natural History.
