Africa-Press – Angola. Initiative foresees to generate up to seven thousand jobs and intends to take advantage of the existing potential in PAENAL

A delegation of businessmen from South Korea worked, Monday (28), in the city of Porto Amboim, province of Cuanza-Sul, to identify investment opportunities in the areas of clean energy production and the installation of a naval shipyard for the manufacture of small and medium-sized boats, in addition to the implementation of the seawater desalination process.

The delegation is assigned to the Korea Economic Development Association in Africa (AKEDA) and was led by the secretary general, Siwoo Chung.

The location chosen by the South Korean business delegation was the Porto Amboim Naval Shipyard (PAENAL), as it has infrastructure that guarantees the execution of the projects.

In a first phase, AKEDA will design infrastructure creation projects, such as a floating nuclear power plant for the production of hydrogen-based energy, a combined cycle gas power plant and a naval shipyard for the manufacture of boats and the introduction on site of a plant for the process of desalination of sea water for human consumption.

Without giving dates for the start of project implementation, AKEDA’s secretary general, Siwoo Chung, assured the press that the conditions found at Paenal are promising, from a technical and environmental point of view, considering the production of green hydrogen in light to be advantageous. of the frameworks established worldwide for the mitigation of harmful effects to the environment.

“We intend to introduce new techniques for the production of clean energy because by 2050 the global reduction of fossil energies is expected, responsible for global warming and the greenhouse effect on the planet”, he said.

As for the project to manufacture small, medium and large vessels, Siwoo Chung said that once the project implementation site has been identified, the steps to be followed will focus on the preparation of projects to be carried out.

Jobs to be created

The secretary general of AKEDA assured that, in the first phase of the projects, 20 million US dollars (about 9.8 billion kwanzas) will be disbursed, increasing the volume of investments through the course of the projects.

“Initially, the projects start small and in other stages the investment values will be increased”, he guaranteed.

He referred that, in all, the projects to be implemented will generate seven thousand direct jobs.

Sonangol was represented by a team from the research and development center (CPD), headed by Vladmimir Machado, who considered it to be a far-reaching initiative judging by the advantages that the projects will bring to Angola.

“Sonangol accompanied the South Korean delegation by bringing initiatives that will strengthen economic cooperation between Angola and the Asian country, and the implementation of projects at Paenal will complement the expectations of the two companies”, he said.

Created in 2007, Paenal has high-tech infrastructure, which guarantees the introduction of other complementary projects. Currently, it works in a containment system, as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
