Africa-Press – Angola. Strengthening basic telecommunications infrastructure is crucial for achieving the goals of the 2023/2027 National Development Plan (NDP), stated Mario Oliveira, the Minister of Telecommunications, Information Technology, and Social Communication, on Monday in Luanda.

The minister made the remark during the closing ceremony of World Space Week, which took place from October 4th to 10th. He highlighted investment in satellite communications and the Earth observation program in particular.

Mario Oliveira stated that the Executive recognizes the fundamental importance of the space sector, given its multifaceted contribution to various segments of the national economy and the well-being of the population.

He said that within the scope of the National Space Program, projects that would have a real socio-economic impact were pursued, with an emphasis on communication projects to promote the new space economy.

The minister stated that these projects are in line with the commitments made between the National Space Program Management Office (GGPEN) and the National Institute for the Support of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (INAPEM).

The two entities identified supporting the emergence and consolidation of startups and micro, small, and medium enterprises in the space sector as a priority. This includes internet distribution via ANGOSAT-2, particularly in remote areas.

“We launched the commercial version of Connect Angola, in which GGPEN provides specialized technology kits to startups that are selected according to previously defined criteria,” Oliveira stated.

The minister announced that at least four startups have been selected to receive the first kits and contribute to the expansion of communications services via ANGOSAT-2. This will help reduce information exclusion.

World Space Week, which runs annually from October 4th to the 10th, was established by the United Nations to celebrate the contributions of space science and technology to improving the human condition.

This year, activities were held in partnership with the Luanda Science Center (CCL) under the national theme, “From Space to Life on Earth,” which highlights the practical applications of space technology in developing key sectors of the national economy.
