Strike: Government regrets loss of 14 academic weeks in Higher Education

Africa-Press – Angola. Yesterday, the Ministry of Higher Education deplored the fact that students had missed 14 academic weeks, due to the teachers’ strike, suspended after three months of stoppage waiting for the differences with the teachers to be resolved.

The Ministry, in a statement quoted, this Thursday (7), by Lusa says that classes should not be interrupted again and asks for the commitment of students and teachers to “make up for lost time”.

“We also hope that in this period the differences that still separate the Union and the Executive can be resolved, in such a way that the claims contained in the memorandum of understanding between the Ministry and the Union can be fully complied with,” the note says.

Classes in public higher education resumed on Tuesday after the National Union of Higher Education Teachers (SINPES) suspended the strike that lasted three months for 30 days.

The secretary general of SINPES, Eduardo Alberto, said on Tuesday that the suspension, for 30 days, between April 5th and May 5th, was deliberated in assembly, but it can be resumed, if the authorities do not accept the new salary proposal.

“In the assembly, we rejected the proposal for a 6 percent salary increase and approved a new one (salary) ranging from 2.6 million kwanzas for the full professor and 1.5 million for the assistant professor intern”, he told Lusa.

In addition to a salary increase, university professors demand better working conditions, payment of public debt and elections for the governing bodies of public higher education institutions.
