Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan team won nine medals, in both sexes at the African Swimming Championships in Zone IV, held in Lu-saka, Zambia.

There are two gold, three silver and four bronze, increasing two more compared to the 2020 edition in Gaborone (Botswana).

In the race, which ended on Sunday, at the 90 Days Legacy pool, the country’s medals were obtained by N’hara Fernandes, in the 50 meters breaststroke, with a time of 36 seconds and 14 tenths, and Maria Freitas (2: 14.97), in the 200 free meters.

The silver ones were snatched by Marco Furtado, in the 100 meters mariposa (1:12.36), and Rhanya Santos, twice runner-up in zone IV, in the 200 meters freestyle and backstroke, with records of (2:31.71 and 1: 53.85), respectively.

Marco Furtado also obtained a bronze, completing the 50 meters mariposa, with times of 30 seconds and 64 tenths.

The other two were achieved by Maria Freitas, in the 100-meter freestyle, when she clocked (1:1.59), and in the 200-meter style event, where she clocked (2:35.55).

The bronze, in the 4x100m freestyle relay, went to Rafaela Santos, Maria Freitas, Jasmine Lourenço and N’hara Fernandes, who had a time of 4:19.76.

Twelfth Place

Angola was in the 12th position of the general medal table, as well as in the eighth position of the points classification.

The Angolan representation was reduced from 18 to 17 swimmers, after Filipe Freitas was forced out of the competition lists due to injury.

He recorded three new records, the first being set by Rhanya Santos, in the 800 meters freestyle, with a time of 11 minutes, 30 seconds and 90 tenths. The previous one (12:04.79) belonged to Welwitschia Silva, since 2019.

Likewise, N’hara Fernandes, with the record (36.14) in the 50 meters breaststroke, broke the previous junior record of (36.20), beaten by Maria Cipcic, in 2016.

Maria Freitas, with the mark of (35.09) in the 50 meters breaststroke, surpassed the senior absolute record of (35.41) made by Maria Cipcic, in 2013, also in Zambia.

The host, Zambia, was the defending champion, with a total of 39 gold, 18 silver and 20 bronze medals, dethroning Zimbabwe, holder of the trophy of the 2020 edition, in Gaberone (Botswana).

Mozambique is the runner-up in zone IV, with 29 gold, 32 silver and 21 bronze medals, while the Zimbabweans dropped two places on the podium, securing third place, with 20 gold, 32 silver and 21 medals. of bronze. Malawi, with two gold and two bronze medals, was in 13th position, while Lesotho won no medals. The next race will be held in South Africa in 2023.
