The Life and Work of Musician Papa Wemba Portrayed in Cultural Activities

Africa-Press – Angola. An exhibition entitled “100% Star – Tribute to Papa Wemba”, to mark the beginning of the celebrations for the 9th anniversary of the death of the Congolese singer, opened this Thursday on Boulevard Triomphal, in Kinshasa, under the auspices of the National Museum of Rumba (MNR), created in April 2022. With the support of the Institute of National Museums of the DRC, this exhibition, which will be open until 11 May 2025, aims to allow Congolese and foreign visitors to (re)discover Papa Wemba’s immense contribution to African culture.

In the Congolese capital, several activities are planned to pay tribute to Papa Wemba’s work. The Cultural and Artistic Centre for Central African Countries, located opposite the People’s Palace, is organising a series of events from 24 to 27 April, including exhibitions, film screenings, concerts and testimonials to celebrate Papa Wemba’s legacy as a giant of his time.Last week, the highlight was the ceremony, which featured speeches and testimonies. In the coming days, the evenings promise to transform Kinshasa into the epicentre of art and culture, recalling Papa Wemba’s successes, with musical productions and performances by the famous “sapeurs”, a fashion and elegance movement closely associated with the Congolese singer. Marie Rose Luzolo, better known as “Mama Amazone”, Papa Wemba’s widow, says that she looked much more to the man than to the artist. “The artist was also my artist. Observing him as Shungu Wembadio, I realised that he was a cultured man with a big heart. God had to endow me with that heart too”, she confesses. Papa Wemba has participated in several projects by African artists. With Eduardo Paím, Wemba performed the song “Kalumba musseque”, included in the album “Etu mu dietu”, released by the Angolan singer in 2012, a work that also had the impetus of the famous singer, guitarist and founding member of the group Kassav, Jacob Desvarieux (1955-2021), in the song “Tá-se Bem”.
