Africa-Press – Angola. A total of 9,700 cases, of which 9,522 were registered as complaints, were received by the Ombudsman’s Office during the past year.

Of the number of cases received, 2,963 were forwarded and 2,564 resolved, given that the Ombudsman is a body that does not have decision-making power and forwards cases to the competent institutions. A further 4,844 hearings were granted nationwide.

Throughout 2024, the Ombudsman’s Office promoted 124 cases on its own initiative, with 67 recommendations being made under the Ombudsman’s initiative programme, which resulted in visits to several provinces and municipalities in the country, with the aim of further publicising the Ombudsman’s services.

As part of the partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), several legal assistance programmes were carried out for citizens, through hearings in the provinces, with emphasis on more than 453 hearings in the provinces of Bié, Lunda-Sul, Moxico, Uíge and Huíla.

The year also confirmed the expansion and proximity of the Ombudsman’s service to citizens, adaptation to the new reality and the modernization of services, aiming to improve the provision of services. In addition to its internal activities, the Ombudsman’s Office has also been present at international training events, as it is a member of the Institute of Ombudsmen, at an international level, of which Angola was the regional director until May 2024.

“We will continue to make tireless efforts, within the scope of the powers and responsibilities conferred upon the Ombudsman, with a view to promoting and protecting the rights, freedoms and guarantees of citizens, expanding the Ombudsman’s Office’s providential services and promoting it more widely in faculties and institutes”, assured Ombudsman Florbela Araújo.
