The approval of the protocols of the Free Trade Area of the African Continent (AFTA) and the tariff offer of Angola, scheduled for the end of the current year, constitute the fundamental elements for the entry into force of the transaction of goods with preferential tariffs between the States. -members.
The conclusion is contained in the set of deliberations of the Extraordinary Meeting of Ministers of Commerce, held yesterday, in Libreville, Gabon, with a focus on finalizing the Draft Protocol on Intellectual Property Rights, Investment and Competition Policy, whose approval and ratification will take place the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.
The Minister of Industry and Commerce, Victor Fernandes, who led the Angolan delegation at the event that the capital of Gabon hosted for two days, clarified Angola’s provisions, guaranteeing that the country is committed to the process that will culminate in the implementation of the desired AfCFTA, with a view to the collective development of countries and the well-being of populations.
“With the conclusion of the second phase of the negotiations, focused on the approval of the AfCFTA Protocols and the possible approval of Angola’s tariff offer, the national business community will have the opportunity to effectively start transacting goods that benefit from preferential tariffs, with the countries that are in the same position”, he said.
The conclave also served to address issues related to the alignment of the project, agenda and decision for the Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government on the African Continental Free Trade Area, scheduled for 25 November, in Niamey, capital of Niger.
The Extraordinary Meeting of African Ministers of Trade was preceded by the Meeting of Senior Trade Officials, and recommended to the Council of Ministers the consideration of preparatory documents for the Summit, including the Draft Concept Note on the Theme of the Year 2023 of the African Union: “Accelerating the Implementation of the AfCFTA”.
