Africa-Press – Angola. Turbine “3” at the Luachimo hydroelectric dam, in Lunda Norte, is out of service due to a technical failure registered during the tests.

The information was provided Wednesday, by the project director, Joaquim Garcia, clarifying that the failure will register in one of the parts of the turbine with capacity to produce 8.5 megawatts of electricity, it is factory and, the contractor was responsible for replacing it. -there.

He said that the part has already been ordered and should arrive in the next few days and as soon as it is assembled, the said turbine will again produce 8.5 megawatts in the experimental phase.

Currently, he continued, one of the four planned turbines is in production, with a capacity of 8.5 megawatts, a reality that imposes constant restrictions on the supply of electricity to the city of Dundo.

On the other hand, he informed that the assembly of the last two turbines with the same production capacities (8.5) is in the final stage and should start producing in the coming days.

He assured that by November of this year, the dam will start producing the projected 34 megawatts.

The rehabilitation and expansion works of the Luachimo dam, underway since 2016, are valued at more than US$212 million and were financed by a credit line from China.

With its conclusion, the project will increase its energy production capacity from 8.4 to 34 megawatts (MW), exceeding the local need, that is, around 50 percent of the energy produced should remain in reserve.

The project includes two electrical substations already completed with a 60 kilovolt transmission network.

The entry into operation of this energy project will allow the expansion of energy to the benefit of 186 thousand residents in the city of Dundo and in the municipalities of Cambulo and Lucapa, including the localities of Fucauma, Cassanguidi, Luxilo and Calonda.

In addition to the home connections that, in the first phase, will benefit more than nine thousand families, the project foresees around 30 industrial connections.
