Africa-Press – Angola. Around 623 million kwanzas (equivalent to one million pounds) could be made available by the United Kingdom this year, in the demining program and in other projects in the country, announced this Monday in Luena, Moxico province , the British Ambassador to Angola, Roger Sringer.
The diplomat was speaking to the press, as part of a working visit to Moxico province, to inspect the demining work carried out by the Grupo Consultor de Minas (MAG), in some locations in this region of the country.
On the occasion, the official stressed that the United Kingdom, in cooperation with other partners and donors, will continue to support the demining program in Angola and other projects that guarantee the development of the country.
“In addition to supporting demining, there are many development projects here in Angola, from agriculture, infrastructure, sustainable energy, health and others, every day we encourage British companies to invest in Angola”, he said.
Roger Sringer revealed that his country has already invested around 15 million pounds (over nine billion kwanzas) in Angola.
On the occasion, he highlighted the work carried out by the Grupo Consultor de Minas (MAG), in the commune of Lucusse, which allowed changing the lives of thousands of people, with the construction of schools and expansion of agricultural activities in the former minefields.
However, he considered that there was still a lot of demining work to be done, judging by the number of minefields in the country, a task that continues to be carried out by MAG.
In the historic commune of Lucusse, the ambassador visited two schools built in former minefields, in addition to meeting the local population, to raise awareness of the dangers of mines.
Between 2013 and 2021, 30 fields have already been demined, corresponding to more than one million 687 thousand square meters of land.
On Tuesday, the British ambassador will visit the municipality of Camanongue, which is 52 kilometers north of the city of Luena, to see other demined areas.
The province of Moxico has 224 minefields that are being intervened by MAG, the National Demining Institute (INAD), the Engineering and Infrastructure Division of the Eastern Military Region and the 7th Demining Brigade of the Military House of the President of the Republic.
In the country, the provinces of Moxico, Cuando Cubango, Cuanza Sul and Bié are the regions with the highest rate of explosives, due to the civil war experienced in the country from 1975 to 2002.
Completion of the demining process in Angola, initially scheduled for 2025, was extended to 2028, due to financial problems.
