Africa-Press – Angola. The Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, this Sunday in Luanda highlighted the potential of Angolan diplomacy for regional stability.

Speaking to the press, at the end of a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Teté António, the diplomat recognized that Angola has the potential to contribute even more to UN peacekeeping operations.

He emphasized that the UN’s relations with Angola are very “strong”, particularly in the field of peacekeeping operations.

The UN diplomat said he discussed with his interlocutor questions about common efforts to promote peace and security in the Great Lakes region and in Central Africa.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Teté António, said that there is room to explore, more and more, opportunities for cooperation with the UN and correspond to the responsibilities of the country’s leadership in the International Conference of the Great Lakes Region (CIRGL) and the title of Champion of Peace in Africa, awarded to President João Lourenço.

The head of Angolan diplomacy recognized that the UN has been a key partner in the pacification of the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), as well as in the efforts to normalize the country’s relations with neighboring Rwanda.

According to the minister, the meeting also served to assess the situation in CAR and Sudan, pointing to the initiative to bring together the parties involved in conflicts in those countries.

The head of the UN mission in the DRC, Bintou Keita, and the resident coordinator of the United Nations System in Angola, Zahari Virani, took part in the meeting.

Founded in October 1945, the UN is an intergovernmental organization created to promote and maintain international peace and security and to develop friendly relations among nations.
