Africa-Press – Angola. The Permanent Secretary of Angolan National Commission for UNESCO, Alexandre Costa, reaffirmed on Friday in Luanda the institution’s full support for the empowerment and gender equality program in the country.
Speaking at the opening of the 2nd edition of the Fair for the Promotion and Empowerment of Women in Angola, Alexandre Costa said that UNESCO is committed to empowerment and gender equality as essential factors for the fulfillment of the African Union (AU) Agenda 2063, as well as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN Agenda 2030.
The UNESCO representative emphasized that the fair aims to promote the participation of women and girls in the arts (drawing, painting, sculpture, handicrafts, tailoring and sewing) and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), to encourage creation and innovation, and to create a space for networking and sharing experiences.
Alexandre Costa said that the 3rd edition of the event would be held in Huambo, with participants from Bié, Benguela, Huíla and Cunene, as well as the host province.
Francisco Pacheco, secretary of state for preschool and primary education, welcomed the event and said it would help promote self-employment.
Each of us has a responsibility to use our technical knowledge to find solutions that improve people’s lives, which is why we will be holding events in the coming months to promote women and girls,” said Francisco.
Under the theme “Promoting a Culture of Peace through the Arts and Sciences,” participants will spend two days discussing issues such as women’s participation in strengthening the cultural industry, challenges, opportunities and strategies.
The fair takes place at the Iron Palace and brings together 60 female exhibitors.
