UNHCR reiterates support to the Executive for the social inclusion of refugees

Africa-Press – Angola. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) will, in partnership with the Angolan Government, continue to develop actions for the social inclusion of refugees and asylum seekers in Angola.

The guarantee was given, in Dundo, by the representative of that agency in Angola, Vito Trani, assuring that in partnership with the different ministerial departments, namely Family and Women’s Promotion, Interior and Health, work is being done to integrate refugees into public policies from the country.

Speaking to the press, as part of a two-day visit to Lunda-Norte, the official said, Thursday, that UNHCR is counting on other partners in this endeavor for humanitarian aid in the most vulnerable cases.

In addition to Vito Trani, the UNHCR mission visiting Lunda-Norte was joined by the ambassadors of Norway, Hotverdt Dahl, United Kingdom, Roger Stringer, the resident coordinator of the United Nations (UN) in Angola, Zahira Virani, and the representative of the World Food Program (WFP), José Ferrão, with the aim of finding out about the situation of refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), sheltered in the settlement in the municipality of Lôvua.

Currently, in Angola, the United Nations agency has a register of 56,000 people, divided into 30,000 asylum seekers and 26,000 refugees, he explained.

Vito Trani referred that of the overall number of refugees in the country, 11 percent are in Lunda-Norte.

He clarified that around 6,700 refugees from the DRC are in the settlement in the municipality of Lôvua and a small number of the same population is in Dundo, capital of Lunda-Norte.

Vito Trani reiterated that UNHCR’s support for refugees is focused on Education, Health and other projects that ensure their social integration.

He added that in addition to familiarization related to life, including the challenges of refugees, the diplomats’ mission also aims to maintain contact with the authorities of Lunda-Norte in order to, in general, find out about the province.

In the particular case of the UN resident coordinator, it has to do with the possibility of supporting refugees from the Lôvua settlement in Lunda-Norte and the Angolan population, through the systems of that body.
