Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, appointed, this Tuesday (29), Adalberto da Costa Júnior and Nimi a Simbi, members of the Council of the Republic, by virtue of their functions as leaders of the UNITA and FNLA parties, respectively.

The presidential decree also mentions the appointment of nationalist and politician Jorge AlicercesValentim as a member of the Council of the Republic.

The appointments, according to the press release of the Civil House of the President of the Republic, have to do with the need to adapt the composition of the Council of the Republic to the changes observed in the presidency of the parties, namely the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA ), in compliance with the Annotation of the Constitutional Court that validated the UNITA congress, held in 2021, and the National Front for the Liberation of Angola (FNLA), held in 2021, and, consequently, the election of new presidents.

As a result, the President of the Republic ended the functions of Isaías Henriques Ngola Samakuva and Lucas Benghy Ngonda, who until now held the positions of councilors, for the same responsibilities at the head of their respective parties.

The Council of the Republic is the collegiate body of an advisory nature to the Head of State. The Vice-President of the Republic, the President of the National Assembly, the President of the Constitutional Court, the Attorney General of the Republic, and former Presidents of the Republic who have not been removed from office are included.

The Council of the Republic also comprises presidents of political parties and coalitions of political parties represented in the National Assembly and ten citizens appointed by the President of the Republic. The members of this council enjoy the immunities conferred on deputies to the National Assembly.
