Africa-Press – Angola. Lawyer Margareth Nanga was chosen by UNITA to be a judge advisor to the Constitutional Court, while the MPLA nominated Amelia Varela, the current Secretary of State for MAPTSS, both as replacements for recently retired members.
UNITA chose the former journalist from Rádio Eclésia, the jurist Margareth Nanga, to fill the vacancy of two it has due to the results of the 2022 elections, while the MPLA nominated the current Secretary of State of the Ministry of Public Administration, Labor and Social Security (MAPTSS), Amelia Varela, Novo Jornal learned.
Margareth Nanga, from UNITA, will occupy the vacancy left by retired judge Josefa Neto, while Amelia Varela will fill the vacancy left by judge Conceição Sango.
Novo Jornal found that names proposed by the two political parties were sent to the National Assembly on the 5th, and approved this Monday by Parliament.
It is worth remembering that of the 11 judges who are part of the Constitutional Court, the presiding judge is appointed to the presidency.
The MPLA and UNITA have two representatives, as a result of the latest election results in 2022.
The remaining 15 have their appointments organised as follows: four are appointed by the President of the Republic, including the presiding judge, four are elected by the National Assembly, two by the Superior Council of the Judiciary and one is selected by public selection process.
As established in article 243 of the Constitution of the Republic, the appointment of advisory judges must be made in such a way as to avoid their total simultaneous renewal, under the terms to be established in the internal regulations of the Court.
