The United Nations tirelessly promises to continue working with the Executive and the National Assembly to ensure compliance with the 2030 Agenda, whose global action plan includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets, created to eradicate poverty and promote a decent life for citizens.

The promise was made yesterday, in Luanda, to the press, by the representative of the United Nations System in Angola, Zahira Virani, at the end of the audience granted to her by the President of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, at the Parliament’s headquarters.

“The National Assembly can count one hundred percent on the support of the United Nations System and all agencies working in Angola, to improve the social and economic conditions of Angolans, within the framework of compliance with the 2030 Agenda”, said the representative of the UN in Angola, which valued the role of the National Assembly in this process.

The UN diplomat said that the meeting also served to congratulate the first woman to hold the position of leader of Parliament: “Angola is one of the few countries in the world, especially in Africa, that has a female leader in Parliament”.

Trades around US$3 billion

In another audience, Carolina Cerqueira received the Indian ambassador to Angola, Pratibha Parkar, with whom she discussed bilateral cooperation at governmental and parliamentary levels.

Speaking to the press at the end of the meeting, which lasted just over 20 minutes, the Indian diplomat informed that bilateral trade covers several economic sectors and amounts to around US$3 billion a year, with India buying 10 percent of the Angolan crude oil, diamonds, and other minerals, while Angola imports medicines and various manufactured utensils from the Asian country.

“Relations between our two countries are old and proceed at a good pace. The two States are working to extend them to various sectors”, said Pratibha Parkar, stressing that bilateral parliamentary relations may take effect from the beginning of the next year. year.

According to the diplomat, this is due to the fact that the Angolan Parliament started the new legislature just a few weeks ago, after the General Elections last August, which reappointed the MPLA and President João Lourenço for another five-year term.

Joining the International Solar Alliance

Pratibha Parkar also said that he discussed with Carolina Cerqueira the need for the Angolan Parliament to approve Angola’s accession as an effective member of the International Solar Alliance, an international organization that helps countries collectively face common challenges for the diffusion of solar energy in line with your needs.

The agreement includes the possibility for countries to develop coordinated actions through grassroots programs and voluntary activities. Among the mechanisms are access to finance, technologies, innovation, research and development, as well as training.

The diplomat from India revealed that the body, based in her country, already has more than 90 members. “I am waiting for the Angolan authorities to opt for Angola to join the body”, said the ambassador, who also congratulated Carolina Cerqueira on her election to the position of leader of the Angolan Parliament.
