United Nations welcomes Equatorial Guinea's abolition of the death penalty

Africa-Press – Angola. The interim United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Nada Al-Nashif, today welcomed the adoption of a new penal code in Equatorial Guinea that enshrines the abolition of the death penalty.

“I welcome the adoption of a new penal code in Equatorial Guinea, which enshrines the abolition of the death penalty. The death penalty is incompatible with the fundamental principles of human rights and dignity”, writes the Jordanian diplomat, in a note to the media. of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva cited by Lusa.

With the signing of the new penal code by the President, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, “Equatorial Guinea becomes the 25th African state to abolish the death penalty, further reinforcing the global trend towards universal abolition and contributing to the strengthening and development of human rights”, adds Nada Al-Nashif.

So far, around 170 states around the world have abolished or introduced moratoriums on the death penalty, either in national laws or in their criminal practices, the UN stresses.

“Equatorial Guinea has not carried out a death penalty since January 2014, when a temporary moratorium on the death penalty was imposed,” adds Al-Nashif.

The Equatorial Guinean vice president, Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, announced this Monday on his Facebook page that “Equatorial Guinea has abolished the death penalty”, considering this a “historic” step for the country.
