Vaccine campaign reaches more than 90,000 cattle in Cunene

Africa-Press – Angola. More than 90 thousand and 179 heads of cattle were vaccinated against contagious pleuropneumonia, symptomatic and hematic anthrax and dermatitis, in Cunene province.

Opened on the 31st of March, the forecast is to immunize 900,000 head in the six municipalities that make up the province by the end of June, in order to safeguard the health of the animals, as they constitute the main source of wealth for families in the region.

In a statement this Monday, the head of Veterinary Services in Cunene, Cláudio Simão, said that the targets are far below the forecast, due to shortages of vaccines and logistical means.

He made it known that, from the beginning, the campaign had 59 thousand doses of PPCB, 42 thousand 700 of symptomatic anthrax, 12 thousand and 700 of anthrax, 30 thousand and 200 doses of affective fever.

He clarified that, given the lack of vaccine doses to cover the six municipalities, initially the campaign is taking place in areas considered endemic, in order to control the spread of diseases.

The official said that, as soon as vaccines are available in the province, the campaign will be developed in all localities, so he asked the breeders, in the sense of joining the vaccination sleeves.

The official exhorted local authorities and traditional authorities to work to raise awareness and mobilize breeders so that they can direct their cattle to vaccination sleeves, stressing that the process is free and aims to safeguard animal health.

Along with bovine vaccination, he also plans to immunize more than 20,000 pets (dogs, cats and monkeys) against rabies, with 15,000 doses available.

In this regard, he highlighted the vaccination of 2,375 dogs and seven cats, during the synchronized vaccination process.

He referred that vaccination is an act that is carried out annually, in order to keep animals healthy and guarantee food security for men.

For this purpose, he noted that 30 brigades were created, comprising a total of 120 veterinary technicians, who will work in the six municipalities of the province.

At provincial level, 335 vaccination sleeves are controlled, of which 290 are rustic and 45 are permanent.

Data from the Government of Cunene province point to the existence of one million and 100 thousand head of cattle, 78% of which are owned by traditional breeders.
