Africa-Press – Angola. The Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, defended, this Tuesday (8), in Sharm El-Sheik, Egypt, at the high-level event parallel to COP27, the need to prepare a Geographical Atlas for the inventory of all existing reservoirs and dams in Southern Africa.

Esperança da Costa, speaking at the panel on “Disaster Risk Management”, said that the elaboration of the Geographic Atlas will allow countries in the region to share data on reservoirs and dams, as well as the monitoring and evaluation of wetlands along the basins. hydrographic.

Angola, stressed the Vice-President of the Republic, recognizes and is aware of the consequences of climate change, the emission of greenhouse gases and social vulnerabilities that are increasingly accentuated around the world.

With these and other challenges facing planet Earth, said Esperança da Costa, there is an urgent need to reflect together to identify political and scientific solutions to reverse the current situation, on a day when COP27 paid tribute to the birthplace of the continent. of Humanity.

According to the Vice-President of the Republic, Angola has done everything to develop environmental scientific research, including improving the earth observation network, through technological and human capital reinforcement.

Esperança da Costa recalled that Angola is implementing the Maputo Declaration, which aims to align and promote joint, coordinated and integrated actions for the recovery, management, monitoring and conservation of the Maiombe forest and beyond.

In addition to the scientific component that the Angolan Government defends as a priority for the fight against climate change, the Vice-President of the Republic stressed, it is also linked to regional initiatives, participating in environmental projects financed by the African Union.

Esperança da Costa, representing President João Lourenço at the 27th United Nations Conference on Climate Change, said that Angola will honor its commitment to continue working to catalyze investments in the context of operationalizing environmental warning systems.

Strengthening relations with FAO

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) intends to improve relations with Angola in the short term, in accordance with the will expressed yesterday, in Sharm El-Sheik, Egypt, by the deputy director, Maria Helena Semedo, in meeting he had with the Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa.

Speaking to the press, on the sidelines of the high-level event parallel to the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference, Maria Helena Semedo said that relations between FAO and Angola are already considered good, but it is intended to elevate them to another level level.

Maria Helena Semedo said that the meeting she had with the Vice-President of the Republic included aspects related to the food production value chain, the strengthening of the connection between sea and land, as well as the need to enhance the work of women in the field of fisheries.

Visit to pavilions

At the end of yesterday, the Vice-President of the Republic visited the “Blue Fund of the Congo Basin” pavilion, having met with the Minister of the Environment of the Republic of Congo, Arlette Soudan-Nonault, with whom she discussed aspects inherent to the bowl.

The Congo Basin is shared by the Republics of Angola, Democratic Congo and Congo, Chad, Rwanda, Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, among other nations.

Esperança da Costa and Samia Suluhu spoke of the need to boost cooperation in the Political and Diplomatic, Defense and Public Security, Education, Tourism, Oil and Gas, Trade and Industry, Banking, Finance and Transport domains.

The Vice-President of the Republic said that strengthening cooperation with Tanzania is of great importance, due to the potential and opportunities that both countries offer.

Esperança da Costa also highlighted the importance of both countries in strengthening international organizations, namely the UN, the African Union and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
