Africa-Press – Angola. The Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, travels this Saturday(5) to the city of Sharm-el-Sheik, Egypt, where, on behalf of the Head of State, João Lourenço, she will participate, as of tomorrow, in the 27th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP27).
Esperança da Costa will join more than 200 Heads of State and Government, leaders of institutions and non-governmental organizations linked to the environment, activists, community groups and companies, to outline a common agenda on the problem and solutions of climate change. .
The Heads of State and Government will also discuss aspects of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and policies capable of helping to prepare countries to deal with climate change, guaranteeing technical support and financing from the nations developed.
COP27 should also analyze policies to control losses and damages, establish a global carbon market and reinforce the commitment to reduce the use of coal. The theme of COP27 will also be agriculture, biodiversity, water, science, decarbonization and energy.
Angola’s position
According to a note from the bodies supporting the Vice-President of the Republic, to which ANGOP had access, during COP27, which runs until the 9th of this month, the Angolan authorities will reaffirm their concern with climate change, one of the greatest challenges that humanity faces, due to the damage that this phenomenon has caused.
At this meeting, Egypt assumes the presidency of the Conference of the Parties (COP27), which marks the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Among the hot topics to be defended by Angola at COP27, the financing of some projects focused on the environment, aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change, should be highlighted.
Angola will present the Blue Carbon projects – which are being designed by the Otchiva Association, with the support of Sonangol and Total – of Photovoltaic Power Plants, the so-called clean energies, under the responsibility of the Ministries of Energy and Water and Natural Resources, Oil and Gas , in addition to the Green Hydrogen project.
These projects will be presented at the Congo Basin Stand, which also has the Blue Fund Project.
The sustainability of protected areas and the impact of solid waste on the environment are, among others, burning issues to be analyzed during COP27.
The note also mentions that Angola has taken concrete steps to mitigate the effect of climate change, one of which was the construction of the Cafu Canal, a project that aims to bring water from the Cunene River to the populations of the provinces of Cunene and Namibe, to mitigate the effects of drought in these regions.
A vast delegation
The Angolan delegation to the United Nations Climate Summit is made up of the Minister of the Environment, Ana Paula de Carvalho, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Esmeralda Mendonça, and the Angolan ambassador to Egypt, Nelson Cosme.
The delegation also included representatives from the Civil House of the President of the Republic, the National Assembly, the Ministries of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, Economy and Planning, Fisheries and Marine Resources, Agriculture and Forestry, Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication. , the boards of Sonangol and Endiama, and members of civil society.
The UN climate summits are held every year, as a way of pressuring States to reach an agreement on the adoption of measures to limit the increase in global temperature, which has already risen 1.1°C and is heading towards 1.5°C. .
According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), if temperatures rise 1.7 to 1.8°C above these levels, half of the world’s population could be exposed to heat and humidity, with serious risks to life.
To avoid this trend, 194 countries signed the Paris Agreement in 2015, committing to “follow up efforts” to try to reverse the increase in global average temperature to pre-industrial times.
According to the United Nations, the also known as the Climate Change Conference takes place against a backdrop of extreme weather events, namely a war-driven energy crisis in Ukraine and data showing that the world is not doing enough to tackle greenhouse gas emissions. carbon and protect the future of the planet.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres said COP27 should bring an “advance payment” on climate solutions that match the scale of the problem.
Last year’s COP26, which marked five years since the signing of the Paris Agreement, culminated in the Glasgow Climate Pact, which kept the goal of containing global warming to 1.5°C alive, but “with a weak pulse” , as the then UK presidency declared at the time.
