Africa-Press – Angola. The World Food Programme (WFP) on Friday distributed more than 10 tons of food products to 271 families in the Mavinda 1 neighborhood, in the municipal seat of Quipungo, Huíla province, as part of a program to combat acute malnutrition.
The action, carried out in partnership with the non-governmental organization World Vision, aims to reinforce the Executive’s initiatives in preventing and reducing malnutrition, through community screening of children under five years of age, as well as pregnant and lactating women in situations of nutritional vulnerability.
The beneficiaries receive specific food supplements for their stability and recovery, according to the interim head of the WFP for the Southern region, Neide Pereira.
The official from this UN agency reported that the program covers a total of 703 families distributed across the three communes of the municipality.
According to the interviewee, each household receives a kit consisting of 60 kilograms of cornmeal, 20 kilograms of beans, four liters of oil, and two kilograms of sugar, corresponding to approximately two months of consumption.
Neide Pereira also highlighted that making these products available aims to reduce the sale and sharing of nutritional supplements among family members, a recurring practice due to economic difficulties, ensuring that therapeutic foods are used exclusively by people undergoing treatment.
With an estimated population of 198,247 inhabitants, Quipungo is located 120 kilometers east of Lubango, the capital of the province.
