Will this be the End of the United Patriotic Front?

Africa-Press – Angola. The decision was taken at the founding congress of PRA-JA Servir Angola, held in Luanda. Abel Chivukuvuku, the party’s elected president, was clear:

“We have to prepare ourselves to move forward alone, but be prepared for the eventuality of conversations. But these conversations have to have rules, because we have already suffered a lot with this FPU issue.”

The United Patriotic Front (FPU) is a political platform made up of UNITA, PRA-JA Servir Angola, Bloco Democrático and members of civil society. It elected 90 deputies in the last Angolan general elections.

Speaking to the press this week, António Dembo, vice-president of the largest Angolan opposition party, said that UNITA will analyze this issue at the next congress.

“As for its formulation, maintenance for approaching the 2027 elections, it will depend on the congresses of our parties”, he states.

The congress of this party could be discussed next Saturday (24.05), in a meeting.

Possibility of continuity

And the Democratic Bloc respects and considers “the decision of PRA-JA Servir Angola taken at the Constitutive Congress to be sovereign”.

Speaking to DW Africa, Mwata Sebastião, secretary general of the BD, said that this intention to leave “does not condition continuity, because the FPU is made up of three parties.”

“This means that any decision that may be taken among the members should not jeopardize the continuity of the Patriotic Front,” he assesses.

Restrained, Mwata also explains that any eventual end of the platform will not be the fault of his party, although he believes that this will not happen.

“Of course it could take another form, it could take on another dynamic, another perspective of the agenda. But the Patriotic Front is here to stay,” he guarantees.

“Divide and conquer”

Since the legalization of PRA-JA Servir Angola, in October last year, there has been talk about the end of the FPU.

Now, is the chronicle of a death foretold confirmed? Ilídio Manuel, an Angolan journalist, responds:

“It was already predictable, although some sectors doubted that there would be a rupture. But the fact is that things ended up as they did and, in a certain way, this benefits the MPLA.”

The analyst believes that the MPLA, the ruling party, “has its fingerprints” on the “death” of the United Patriotic Front.

“In fact, he already has a history of destabilizing opposing parties to split them, in a way that follows the principle of ‘divide and conquer’,” he ponders.

Ilídio Manuel regrets its end before the 2027 general elections.

“It’s a shame. It’s a coalition that has already made gains in the political arena, but everything points to it not having legs to stand on,” concludes the journalist.
