Africa-Press – Angola. More than 200 Heads of State and Government will gather, starting today, in the city of Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, at the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) to discuss the commitment regarding technical and financial support that developed countries must provide to the poorest in order to cope with the effects of climate change.
The Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, who represents the Head of State, João Lourenço, at the meeting, arrived yesterday in Sharm el-Sheikh, having then had a meeting with the Minister of the Environment, Ana Paula de Carvalho, for the analysis of the environmental projects carried out by the Executive in the environmental sector.
Ana Paula de Carvalho, speaking to the press, said that Angola is prepared to present projects that demonstrate the Government’s commitment to environmental commitments during the Summit’s thematic days on Climate Change.
According to the Environment minister, the agenda to be presented by the Angolan delegation, led by the Vice-President of the Republic, brings solutions that, in the medium and long term, will mitigate the impact of climate change in the country.
The Ministry of Energy and Water, as well as Sonangol, stressed that they have projects in several provinces, in the scope of renewable energy, green hydrogen and the plantation of mangroves that will help with decarbonization. He recalled that carbon has negative effects on the environment.
Regarding biodiversity policies and the national hydrographic network, the Minister of the Environment said that Angola will present its Strategic and Action Plan at COP27, taking into account the recommendations of previous summits regarding its protection.
On the day dedicated to discussions on biodiversity, he said, Angola, among the various topics to be discussed, will present the National Hydrographic Network, as well as projects related to the protection of the Giant Sable Antelope and Welwichia Mirabilis.
Importance of the meeting on the African continent
The Angolan ambassador to Egypt, Nelson Cosme, said that the fact that the United Nations Conference on Climate Change is being held in Africa demonstrates that there is great concern on the part of Africans and that the claims made at the previous summit were extremely coherent.
Nelson Cosme, who is part of the Angolan delegation to the conference, said that the Vice-President’s presence in Egypt demonstrates, on the one hand, the Executive’s concern with climate change and, on the other hand, the strengthening of bilateral cooperation between Angola and Egypt.
“In recent years, the volume of Egyptian investment in Angola has increased from US$3 billion to US$6 billion, in the fields of clean energy and infrastructure,” he revealed.
The diplomat also highlighted the fact that visas in diplomatic and service passports have been suppressed and that there has been an increase in regular consultations at the political level.
“There is also strong cooperation in the field of transport, where there is the possibility of setting up a bus line in Luanda,” said Nelson Cosme.
