Africa-Press – Angola. The lack of incentives and a stronger policy aimed at promoting and valuing literature in Cunene province constitutes an obstacle to the emergence of new talents and good readers, said this Wednesday, writer Isdore Otombo.
On the state of literature in the region, he referred that the lack of policies to encourage books is one of the main reasons for the reduction in reading habits, associated with the lack of libraries and bookstores.
According to the writer, in Cunene there isn’t a single bookstore, so that citizens can buy a book and only has a municipal library and a media library that have some literary material.
Even so, he added that these sites have little readership, a fact that requires educational institutions to promote scientific research.
“If we don’t have bookstores and libraries, it is difficult to encourage people to read, because it is from these places that we must instill in the minds of young people the importance of reading for the country’s development and for the necessary changes in social paradigms”, he underlined.
He justified that it was fundamental that in the curriculum programs teachers create conditions for investigating typical phenomena, in order to encourage students to look for books.
Isdore Otombo adds that the problem would not be so serious if there was awareness that it is necessary to encourage scientific research in educational institutions and in the family.
Regarding the publication of books, he said it was very low, where in the last five years only three local writers published books.
On the promotion of literature, he pointed out the existence of the community library project, through the exhibition of books on the street, where in the beginning there was a great adherence of people.
