Africa-Press – Angola. For millions seeking everything from cat videos to educational tutorials, YouTube has long been the platform of choice. However, with 3.7 million videos uploaded daily, finding the perfect one can be challenging. Endless scrolling, searching, and indecision often leave users feeling frustrated.
To simplify browsing, YouTube is borrowing a strategy from Netflix and testing a new feature called “Play Something,” designed to help users find content to watch without the hassle of making a decision.
The “Play Something” button is ideal for those moments when you’re unsure what to watch from YouTube’s extensive library or just want to explore something new. Located above the app’s bottom bar, it plays a random video with a single tap.
The feature can choose either a YouTube Shorts clip or a full-length video, but it will always be shown in portrait mode. While the reason for this choice remains unclear, we hope it will be adjusted when the feature is officially rolled out.
The feature is currently in beta on Android devices, and its wider availability remains unclear for now.
For dedicated YouTube users, like myself, who feel they’ve seen everything, this feature would be a welcome addition. With YouTube’s recent experiments with new features like voice replies and Shorts-style infinite scroll for long-form videos, the platform seems determined to find fresh ways to keep things engaging.
YouTube is currently the second-largest social platform, boasting 2.7 billion monthly active users, just ahead of WhatsApp’s 2.4 billion, according to Exploding Topics. With experimental features like this, that gap could grow substantially in the future.
