Africa-Press – Angola. The government of Zaire Province on Sunday, in Mbanza Kongo City, reaffirmed its continued support for former combatants and veterans of the homeland, with a view to gradually improving their living conditions.
This commitment was reaffirmed by the provincial delegate for Former Combatants and Veterans, Domingos Rafael, in a message from the government of Zaire, as part of the celebrations of 4th January, Day of the Cassanje Massacre Martyrs.
According to the message, the determination and sacrifices made by the heroes of the heroic deed of Cassanje Massacre, in the province of Malanje, must continue to be honoured with the implementation of social projects for the benefit of the population.
It notes that the Cassanje Massacre – perpetrated by the colonial authorities in the early 1960’s- caused an uprising from the indigeneous people that was decisive in the struggle for national liberation, which resulted in the achievement of national independence on 11th November, 1975.
“4th January is a symbol of the resistance and bravery of Angolans under colonial rule. It is a reminder that our struggle for independence was not in vain”, reads the message.
On the occasion, the governor of Zaire, Adriano Mendes de Carvalho, laid a wreath on the tomb of the unknown soldier, located in the upper part of the city of Mbanza Kongo.
Members of the Provincial Government, former combatants, traditional authorities and representatives of the defence and security bodies participated in the ceremony.
However, this year, the event will be held under the motto “4 January- honouring the martyrs of colonial repression is keeping our history alive”.
