Africa-Press – Botswana. With the closing of the African Cup of Nations (CAN), the 32 teams that compete in the 28th edition of the Senior Men’s Handball World Cup, to be co-organized by Poland and Sweden, next year are already known.
The competition, under the aegis of the International Federation (IHF), runs from 11 to 29 January 2023, and the draw took place in the Polish city of Katowice. Denmark, two-time World Champion, plays the preliminary round in Group H, alongside Belgium, Bahrain and Tunisia.
Spain, Montenegro, Chile and Iran are in the A, France, Poland, Saudi Arabia and Slovenia are in the B. Sweden, Brazil, Cape Verde and Uruguay are in the C, Iceland, Portugal, Hungary and South Korea are in the D. Germany , Qatar, Serbia and Algeria complete the E, Norway, North Macedonia, Argentina and the Netherlands form the F, while Egypt, Croatia, Morocco and the United States of America form the G.
Nine cities host the world event, four from Poland and five from Sweden. Tauron (Krakow Arena), Ergo (Gdansk), Spodek (Katowice) and Orlen (Plock Arena) are Polish cities and pavilions. Stockholm (Tele2 Arena), Malmo (Arena), Gothenburg (Scandinavium), Kristianstad (Arena) and Jonkoping (Husqvarna Garden) are Swedish cities and sports venues.
After finishing in eighth position in the CAN ranking table, the National Team, under the orders of José Pereira “Kidó”, failed to participate in the competition, after three consecutive participations, France’ 2017, Germany’ 2019 and Egypt’ 2021. Cape Verde is present for the second consecutive time.Last year, in Egypt, the Blue Sharks had their participation interrupted because of Covid -19, which attacked a large part of the squad.
African from Rwanda
The national junior men’s handball team continues its preparation, in the Main Pavilion of Cidadela, for the dispute of the African Cup of Nations (CAN), taking place in Rwanda, from 18 to 28 August. The technical and tactical contents dominate the work of the group guided by William de Almeida. Angola is part of Group A, with Tunisia, Morocco, Rwanda and the Central African Republic (CAR). Egypt, Algeria, Congo and Libya are part of B. The two best teams from each group qualify for the semi-finals. The others play the classifications from the fifth to the eighth place of the classification table.
Paulo Gonga, Virgílio Salvador, Emanuel Ngunza, Evaristo Kiaku, José Chicola, José Diata, Hugo Bilumbo, Gabriel Sebastião, José dos Santos, Sérgio Constantino, Garcia Malandua, Abel Dumbo, Estêvão Gomes, Paulo Domingos, Fábio Pedro, Cristóvão Lisboa, Euclides João, Pedro Domingos, Rúben José, Santana Kanguar, João António and Elias Chequete are the players called up for “operation” Kigali.
