Africa-Press – Botswana. Moshupa youth have been urged to strive for continuous self-improvement.

Addressing the youth during an employability training in Moshupa on Thursday, acting deputy director at the department of Employment Services Ms Kebalemogile Mokopi said it was vital for the youth to find ways of improving themselves, in order to be employable.

The training aimed to equip the youth with soft skills to enhance their employability.

It was also geared to explore job opportunities, job search strategies and how to leverage on the existing strategic networks.

Ms Mokopi highlighted that the department was responsible for overall employment policy formulation and implementation, employment programmes, employment promotion and creation.

She said the organisation also focused on labour migration plan to ensure that those coming to Botswana possessed skills, which they would impart to the locals.

She said they were also tasked with ensuring that Batswana who worked outside the country acquired skills that they would later come back and employ locally.

“We strive to ensure that you are equipped with skills, which would make you competitive, hence employable,” she added.

Ms Mokopi urged the youth to register in the job seekers data base and to regularly update their profiles as well as to register for various programmes such as national internship.

“Our offices are always open for you, visit us for any assistance in relation to employment even preparation for interviews,” she informed them.

Ministry of Youth, Gender, Sport and Culture’s South region district Coordinator, Mr Moeti Godisamang also stressed the importance of continuous self-improvement.

He highlighted that government could not win the fight against unemployment alone, hence the need for collaborative efforts towards attainment of employment creation.

Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs’ Principal Youth Programmes Officer, Ms Bagele Masimole advised the youth to use digital platforms wisely, in a way that would benefit them in terms of securing employment.

“Employers do background search of job seekers online and if you paint a bad picture of yourself, it would be difficult to secure employment,” she said.

Ms Masimole informed attendees that the training was also meant to get ideas from them on how best the ministry could assist them.

She further urged them to embrace mindset change and start doing things differently in a positive way.

She said the ministry had been mandated to implement some of the initiatives within Generation Unlimited (GenU) movement.

She said GenU was a global, multi-sector, public-private youth partnership created to meet the urgent need for expanded education, training and employment opportunities for young people.

The movement, she said amongst other things aimed to up skill the youth with employment and entrepreneurial skills so as to thrive in the world of work.

Labour and home affairs public relations office representative Ms Magdeline Samuel urged the youth to venture into entrepreneurship as a viable option for employment creation.

She also advised them to volunteer for different jobs to network, gain experience and eventually secure employment.

Youth volunteerism, she said was important as it complemented formal education in teaching skills required for the job market.

“Also partake in different activities such as drama as they have the potential to boost your confidence, which is vital in securing employment such as during interviews,” she advised.
