Africa-Press – Botswana. Concern over poor academic results has seen Kgari Sechele Senior Secondary School in Molepolole introducing a new program where all stakeholders have to account for their performance.

Under the program, Accounting for Results, the teachers, parents and students come together at the beginning and end of every term to discuss the results.

Speaking in an interview, the school’s head teacher Ms Maitse Kebobone said the students and their parents present their results before their respective classes and discuss how they passed or why they failed and discuss how they will improve their performance in the next term.

She said students were not taking advantage of the morning and evening study and further, parents were also not involved in their academic work.

The head teacher said they expected good results from the students given their excellent performance at Junior Certificate level and therefore have the potential to pass their final examinations and proceed to tertiary institutions.

The Head of Department Ms Kebone Gaisitsima said the school was using this programme to help students acquire better grades hence involvement of parents and showing them how they could assist their children.

This programme was started in the second term last year and this year it was introduced earlier and would continue in all the remaining school terms.

For his part, Mr Mogomotsi Maratile, a computer studies teacher said students who had not done well at junior school had low self-esteem hence the teachers were involved to build their confidence.

Ms Boitswarelo Nogeng, a parent, commended the school for introducing the programme emphasising that parents were mow fully engaged in their academic journey rather than relying solely on teachers. On behalf of the students Faith Nkosane said the initiative has helped students who were academically struggling to improve their results and those who had a negative attitude towards learning were eager to get better grades.

She said as students they set targets for themselves but exonerate their teachers and parents since they were involved in their academic nourishment.
