Eight Survive Boat Accident during Rescue Mission

Africa-Press – Botswana. A team comprising four Botswana Defence Force (BDF) scuba divers, three National Disaster Management Office personnel and a Botswana Power Corporation technical officer escaped unhurt when their boat capsized in the Notwane River in Mochudi on Saturday.

The team had just completed a mission to remove a tree that had disrupted power in the area.

Disaster Relief Operations Task Force Commander South, Brigadier Modisane Ponyane told BOPA that the boat was overpowered by the strong current which caused it to hit a tree and overturn.

He, however, noted that all the team members managed to swim to safety.

The four BDF Combat Engineer Scuba Diver Unit members are skilled in swimming and water rescue operations and were able to ensure that together with other team members, they emerge from the river safely, he said.

He said an additional boat was sent to rescue them while the other towed the initial boat offshore. All the officers were airlifted to a local health facility where they were confirmed to be without injuries.
