Africa-Press – Botswana. Minister of Higher Education, Mr Prince Maele has embarked on an initiative to strengthen international cooperation in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), seeking partnerships and scholarship opportunities from the Czech Republic.

Speaking during a courtesy call by the Consulate of the Czech Republic Prof Branko Cavric in Gaborone today, Mr Maele emphasised the importance of diversifying Botswana’s education sector, to align with global industry demands. He noted that enhancing the country’s TVET system was critical to addressing youth unemployment and equipping the nation with a skilled workforce.

“Our goal is to create a more dynamic and industry-responsive education system,” said Mr Maele, adding that partnering with the Czech Republic which had a well-established TVET model would provide students with access to world-class training and exposure.

“TVET is the way to go, as the clothes we wear, the furniture we using now, are results of TVET,” he said.

Mr Maele said Botswana’s renewed interest in vocational education came at a time when the government was seeking to reduce reliance on traditional academic pathways, and instead promote practical skills development in areas such as engineering, renewable energy, ICT, and manufacturing.

Consulate of the Czech Republic, Prof Cavric expressed interest in strengthening ties with Botswana through educational cooperation. Prof Cavric emphasised that numerous untapped opportunities existed for collaboration across multiple sectors.
