Africa-Press – Botswana. Messrs Tshepo Motswagole, Michael Leburu, and Lot Moroka were sworn in as justices of the Court of Appeal.

President Advocate Duma Boko, who presided over the swearing-in ceremony at the Office of the President yesterday, commended the newly appointed justices and described them as distinguished legal professionals of great stature and repute.

He said the judges had risen through the ranks from the High Court, earning recognition through their trailblazing judgments and exemplary performance.

“Today, they serve in the highest court in the land, beyond which there is little to no recourse,” President Boko said, emphasising the gravity of their new roles and responsibilities.

He reminded the justices of the importance of upholding justice and maintaining the highest ethical standards in their service.

“The legal profession is sacred. Becoming a judge is not merely a career choice but a calling that requires unwavering adherence to ethical and professional standards,” President Boko said.

The President acknowledged the weight of their new roles, emphasising respect for the judiciary while also urging society to understand the responsibilities that come with the position.

He also reflected on the discipline inherent in the legal profession, pointing out that regulations and traditions govern all practitioners, regardless of status.

“It doesn’t matter who you are, those of us who have signed up and been admitted are still subject to the regulation of this profession. That is why I hold the title of Advocate dearly, as it reminds me of the tradition I belong to and the responsibilities I carry.”

Therefore, President Boko assured the new justices that he remained fallible and open to accountability.

“You have the power to call me to order if necessary, because I am also subject to the same foundational principles,” he said.
