Africa-Press – Botswana. Development Studies (DVS) learners at Kgari Sechele II Senior Secondary School in collaboration with Hike Connect Botswana embarked on a hiking extravaganza in a mission to raise funds for building a classroom block. The DVS teacher, Mr Meshack Tiro said the teaching area that the learners wanted to donate to the school was estimated to worth around P100 000, adding that the current learners had collected a miniscule amount hence he pleaded for well-wishers to help the learners’ dream come true.
Initially, Mr Tiro said the pupils had after learning that there was a shortage of classrooms in the school, planned to buy two porta cabins to be used as classrooms, but the cabins proved too expensive. For her part, Hike Connect Botswana director and founder, Ms Tuduetso Bathobakae said the hiking expedition was also aimed at taking learners around the expanse of the Bakwena heritage relics where the ancient Molepolole parish used to be.
Another purpose of the hiking spree, she said, was to give the newer generations, an insight in what to most of them remained untold stories or they perceived as fables especially about the truth and mysteries attached to the Kobokwe’s cave or David Livingstone’s cave. Ms Bathobakae advised Batswana to see hiking as mental refresher and physical exercise.
Amongst the hikers, Dr Dipesalema Joel, a Paediatrician at Sir Ketumile Masire Teaching Hospital, who said that despite the ragged terrain, that needed someone who was strong as they travelled through steep slopes, penetrated thick bushes, rocky pathways, gorges, the end results were good as it was an omnibus of historical lessons.
“We successfully completed the 21km heritage walk. We went up the hills of Molepolole, the heritage sites. We visited the gorge. We also visited the Kobokwe cave. There is big story behind the cave that shows the history of the Bakwena people,” he said.
