Africa-Press – Botswana. The Ministry of Youth and Gender Affairs (MYGA) is preparing to conduct a Relationship Study in Gaborone as part of its ongoing efforts to address social challenges affecting young people and families. The initiative was announced by the Minister of Youth and Gender Affairs, Lesego Chombo, during the presentation of the Ministry’s Public Investment Programme.

According to the Programme, the study will be based in Botswana’s capital and will examine the underlying causes of relationship problems. The findings will help develop strategies to strengthen relationships and reduce conflicts that often lead to Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

Minister Chombo said the study aims to generate evidence that will inform policy interventions and community programs promoting healthier relationships. She noted that understanding the dynamics behind relationship breakdowns is essential to reducing violence, improving mental health, and supporting family stability.

The Relationship Study is part of MYGA’s broader Youth and Gender Mainstreaming agenda, which focuses on social protection, empowerment, and inclusivity. Other projects within the same framework include the establishment of GBV safe havens, a GBV Information Management System, and a national study on Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing.

The GBV safe havens will offer immediate protection and psychosocial support to survivors, while the Information Management System will enhance data collection and coordination among service providers. The youth mental health study will assess challenges faced by young people and recommend practical interventions for resilience and emotional wellbeing.

Minister Chombo emphasized that addressing relationship challenges and violence requires a comprehensive approach that combines data, community engagement, and policy reform. She said the Ministry remains committed to building safer spaces for women, men, and youth across the country.

The Relationship Study is expected to begin later this year, with findings anticipated to guide future programmes under the Ministry’s social development agenda. By understanding the root causes of relationship issues, the government hopes to strengthen families, reduce GBV, and promote emotional wellbeing among citizens.
