Africa-Press – Botswana. The Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education has dedicated the past couple of weeks to emphasizing child welfare. While the Head Office focused on organizing the International Children’s Day event to highlight the importance of prioritizing child welfare, the South Region hosted a Special Olympics Selection Exercise from 12 to 13 November 2025 at the Moshupa Sports Complex.
The event saw the participation of Moshupa Sub-Region Chief Education Officer Ms Tsietso, Chief Education Secretary for Moshupa District Ms Moalafi, Principal Education Officer I Learner Support Ms Omphitlhetse Botshabelo, and Principal Education Officer I Primary Mr Matshelo Bokgolea from the South Region.
The selection activities included ball sports such as football and netball, as well as track and field events. Competitions covered relays, 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters, and brisk walking. These activities aimed to identify talented athletes who could represent the region at the national level.
The next phase will be the National Special Olympics competitions at Lobatse Stadium. Athlete health screenings will take place from 22 to 23 November 2025, followed by the competitions from 24 to 28 November 2025. The Ministry emphasized that the event provides opportunities for children to showcase their skills, promote inclusivity, and highlight the importance of child welfare through sports.
