Africa-Press – Botswana. The Minister of Communication and Innovation, Hon. David Tshere, has highlighted the need for affordable data for every Motswana. He spoke during a press briefing in Gaborone today and said digital access is central to government plans to move services online.

He said the Ministry, working through BOCRA, has engaged internet providers such as Mascom and Orange to lower data tariffs. The goal is to make digital access affordable for all citizens so they can use online government platforms. Data tariffs have dropped from 13 thebe to 9 thebe. The target is to reach 2 thebe by 2027. The reductions cover data, voice calls and SMS.

He shared progress on the Digital Delta Data Centre. The President, Advocate Duma Gideon Boko, will launch the facility on 25 November 2025. The centre will support Botswana’s aim to position itself as a regional digital hub. It is expected to attract investors and strengthen digital infrastructure across Southern Africa.

The data centre will also support the migration of government ICT systems. This will improve access to online services and increase system reliability. It will also enhance the Government Accounting and Budgeting System for faster and more secure payments.

The Ministry operates the 1gov.1citizen website, which offers 52 active services. The platform serves as a single gateway for government information and online processes. It allows Batswana to find and use public services through one portal.

The Minister said these projects move Botswana closer to a fully digital public service environment. They aim to give every citizen equal access to information, services and economic opportunities powered by digital infrastructure.
