Africa-Press – Botswana. The Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) Botswana and BA ISAGO University have signed a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that sets the stage for expanded collaboration in climate education, sustainability research, and youth leadership development.

The formal signing, held at BA ISAGO University, was attended by senior members of the University’s leadership, including President Dr. R. Tadu, Vice President Dr. M. Nyakudya, and representatives from various faculties. Their presence underscored BA ISAGO’s commitment to innovative, market-responsive education and its growing role in preparing Botswana’s youth for emerging environmental and economic challenges.

GAYO Botswana was represented by National Director Bokang F. Basejane and Education and Eco-Club Coordinator Tebogo Cleopatra Bahiti, who described the partnership as a significant milestone in strengthening climate action initiatives across the country. They highlighted that the agreement aligns closely with GAYO’s national mission to empower young people, promote sustainable development, and enhance community resilience to climate change.

The MoU provides a comprehensive framework for collaboration between the two institutions. It commits both parties to work together on sustainability research, public lectures, student outreach programmes, and climate-focused innovation. The partnership also supports the expansion of the GAYO Eco-Club within BA ISAGO University, integrated with the institution’s existing environmental conservation efforts. This will create a dynamic platform for students to engage in practical climate action, leadership development, and green entrepreneurship.

Both institutions will jointly undertake projects such as zero-waste campaigns, capacity-building workshops, and community-based environmental initiatives. They will also cooperate through BA ISAGO’s Climate Change and Entrepreneurship Centre (CCEC), strengthening the link between academic learning and real-world climate solutions. Resource-sharing, where applicable, forms part of the commitment to ensure successful implementation of agreed activities.

With a student population of more than 3,700 across its Gaborone, Francistown, and Maun campuses, BA ISAGO offers a wide reach for delivering sustainability education. The institution’s diverse academic programmes and its more than 17,700 alumni position it as a significant partner in promoting environmental stewardship among young people in Botswana.

The MoU will remain in force for five years, from 2025 to 2030, with the possibility of renewal upon mutual agreement.

Speaking after the signing, GAYO Botswana National Director Bokang F. Basejane noted that the collaboration marks “a new chapter for youth climate leadership in Botswana,” adding that the agreement is not just a formality but a concrete step toward equipping young Batswana with the tools to shape a more sustainable future.

BA ISAGO University leadership reaffirmed the importance of embedding sustainability into tertiary education, stating that partnerships of this nature are essential in preparing learners to navigate an evolving global landscape.

This partnership represents a shared commitment to nurturing the next generation of climate leaders and strengthening Botswana’s capacity to respond to environmental challenges. Both institutions expressed optimism about the transformative impact the collaboration is expected to deliver in the years ahead.
