Africa-Press – Botswana. The Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education brought together 341 Child Advocates from districts across Botswana. The gathering aims to amplify the voices of young people and ensure that children’s concerns are acknowledged and addressed at all levels of governance.
The four-day event focuses on electing new leadership for the National Children’s Consultative Forum, including the National Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, and District Chairpersons. The programme also features an orientation session to prepare incoming leaders for their responsibilities, a certificate-awarding ceremony honoring outgoing members, district-led campaign presentations, and the final elections.
During her opening remarks, Minister of Child Welfare, Hon. Nono Kgafela Mokoka, highlighted the ongoing challenges facing children in Botswana. She expressed concern about violations of children’s rights and pledged to strengthen initiatives that safeguard and promote their welfare.
Outgoing NCCF Chairperson Ms. Aumake Aaron reflected on the year’s theme, “NOTHING FOR US WITHOUT US,” stressing the importance of active youth participation. She emphasized that decisions affecting children are only meaningful when young people are directly involved in shaping them.
The forum also provided a platform for district representatives to present campaigns aimed at addressing local challenges. Discussions focused on child protection, access to education, health services, and civic engagement. Participants shared strategies to enhance community awareness and encourage youth-led initiatives.
The four-day programme promises to equip new leaders with the skills and knowledge required to represent children effectively. By fostering dialogue and leadership development, the NCCF aims to create a stronger, more inclusive platform for children nationwide.
The event underscores Botswana’s commitment to ensuring that children are active participants in shaping policies and decisions that impact their lives.
