Africa-Press – Botswana. Botswana and Zambia have taken a historic step in regional integration with the official commissioning of the Kazungula Bridge Authority (KBA), cementing their joint management of the Kazungula Bridge and its One-Stop Border Post. The event, held at the Landing Bay of the bridge, brought together President Duma Gideon Boko and President Hakainde Hichilema, symbolising the strong ties and shared vision between the two nations. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cross-border cooperation and creating tangible benefits for the Southern African region. The ceremony highlighted not just infrastructure development but also a strategic approach to leveraging regional assets for trade, mobility and economic growth. By formalising the partnership, Botswana and Zambia are sending a clear signal of their intent to deepen collaboration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Following the commissioning, the two governments signed an addendum agreement in Kasane, establishing the Kazungula Bridge Authority as a legal and operational entity. This Authority is tasked with the sustainable management of the bridge and associated facilities, ensuring efficiency and accountability in daily operations. By consolidating responsibilities under a single body, the bridge’s administration can streamline processes, reduce bureaucratic delays and enhance oversight. The Authority also provides a platform for monitoring revenue collection and trade facilitation, which is critical for long-term economic planning. Its creation reflects a forward-looking approach that aligns infrastructure management with broader regional development goals.
The leaders underscored the strategic importance of the Kazungula Bridge for regional trade, noting its potential to transform the North-South Corridor into a fully operational trade artery. President Duma Gideon Boko announced plans to transition the border into a 24-hour “nonstop border system,” enabling continuous movement of goods and people. This system is expected to significantly reduce congestion, lower transport costs and improve the efficiency of cross-border logistics. Traders, transport operators and businesses stand to benefit from faster clearance times and more predictable supply chains. By maximising the bridge’s operational potential, both countries aim to strengthen trade linkages within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and across the continent.
President Hakainde Hichilema emphasised that the initiative represents a new approach to governance based on accountability, collaboration and measurable outcomes. He highlighted the role of practical, results-driven cooperation in advancing regional trade under AfCFTA and boosting economic integration in SADC. This partnership is a model for addressing shared challenges through collective solutions, demonstrating how infrastructure can serve as a catalyst for development. By combining political commitment with institutional capacity, Botswana and Zambia aim to create a replicable framework for other cross-border projects in the region. The focus on impact-oriented collaboration ensures that citizens, businesses and governments all benefit from strategic infrastructure.
The establishment of the Kazungula Bridge Authority marks a significant milestone in regional cooperation, trade facilitation and economic growth. It guarantees sustainable management of the bridge, enhances revenue collection, and strengthens the movement of goods and people across borders. The initiative also signals a commitment to maximising the benefits of AfCFTA while fostering long-term prosperity for both nations. By combining strong political will, institutional innovation and practical solutions, Botswana and Zambia are setting a benchmark for cross-border partnerships in Africa. This milestone is not just about a bridge; it is a statement of vision, unity and shared opportunity for the Southern African region.
