Absa Launches Green Energy Loan for Solar Adoption

Africa-Press – Botswana. Botswana receives around 1.3 billion gigawatt hours of solar energy annually, placing it among countries with the highest levels of solar radiation globally. Despite this potential, the country has harnessed only a fraction of its solar capacity.

At the recent launch of the Absa Green Energy Loan, ABSA Bank Botswana managing director, Ms Keabetswe Pheko-Moshagane, highlighted the need to tap into this abundant resource. The loan is designed for retail clients who wish to install solar energy solutions in their homes. It provides comprehensive financing of up to P500,000, enabling households to adopt clean, renewable energy and contribute to Botswana’s sustainable energy transition.

Ms Pheko-Moshagane stated that Absa would collaborate with local solar installers to fully leverage Botswana’s solar potential. “By embracing this solution, each of us has the opportunity to showcase the benefits of solar energy in our own homes and advance Botswana’s journey toward energy sufficiency,” she said.

She also pledged continued partnership with government agencies, private sector players, and development partners to deliver bankable projects and build an enabling ecosystem for renewable energy growth.

Ms Pheko-Moshagane emphasised that Absa is committed to championing renewable energy and sustainable practices at a time when the region faces growing pressure to reduce reliance on coal-fired power. The move aligns with global decarbonisation commitments and positions Botswana to play a leading role in the transition to clean energy.
