Africa-Press – Botswana. Newly appointed chairperson of the G77+China General Yoweri Museveni has told delegates at the 3rd South Summit held in Kampala of the need for effective action to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Delivering opening remarks at the start of the summit at on Sunday, General Museveni said accelerating the implementation would mean realising the vision, shared principles and commitments, particularly eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions and the pledge that “no one will be left behind”.

“Setting the path towards the realisation of leaving no one behind requires that as a group we remain united in our demand to the international community to support developing countries to urgently address the global challenges in particular poverty, hunger, digital divide and climate change,” he said.

General Museveni said there was threat to multilateralism and steady rise of unilateralism, which made all susceptible to the impact of the current unjust international economic order.

He said as the G77 and China, there was need to work collectively to ensure a just and equitable economic order as envisaged 59 years ago at the inception of the group. General Museveni said Uganda had accelerated its national efforts to implement the 2030 Agenda in its entirety, which he said was critical to national aspirations to ensuring that no one was left behind.

“Uganda has identified four key sectors of wealth creation and job creation that include commercial agriculture, industrialisation, services and Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to support our socio-economic transformation. Government is implementing targeted interventions in the above key sectors, with a view to ensure that no one is left behind,” he added.

He commended all developing countries for their contributions in strengthening the element of international cooperation. He urged them to uphold the solidarity, which was a pillar in helping to safeguard collective interests.

He said the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) led the way to strengthening intra trade among African countries to ensure prosperity for the African people. United Nations General Assembly President Mr Dennis Francis said the summit was a momentous event that highlighted the unshakable commitment of the group.

He said the world was faced with multifaceted challenges ranging from geopolitical tensions especially the harrowing humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in the Gaza Strip. “The world is looking to UN for answers.

The General Assembly is not idling in the face of all these calamities. I shall not get weary of reiterating our demands. We call on the support of the G77+China for the success of our efforts,” he said.

Mr Francis told delegates at the summit that all nations had to come together and build bridges of dialogue.

He said summits such as the Third South Summit represented an opportunity that was to be seized to re-evaluate commitments.
