Africa-Press – Botswana. Acting President Ndaba Nkosinathi Gaolathe participated in the University of Botswana’s fourth marathon yesterday, successfully completing the 10km race. The event aimed to raise funds for the UB Graduate Scholarship Endowment Fund, which supports students pursuing postgraduate studies.
During the marathon, Mr. Gaolathe highlighted the importance of investing in human capital as a key driver of Botswana’s development vision. He praised the UB Foundation for its role in alleviating the government’s financial burden on education while providing hundreds of students with opportunities to advance their academic careers.
The Acting President emphasized that initiatives like the marathon strengthen both education and community engagement. By linking fundraising with physical activity, the event promotes awareness of healthy lifestyles while supporting critical educational programs.
Mr. Gaolathe also noted the importance of physical activity in addressing public health challenges. Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), he said, account for nearly half of all deaths in Botswana. Promoting regular exercise through events such as the marathon contributes to healthier communities and reduces the long-term healthcare burden.
The University of Botswana’s marathon continues to be a platform for combining fitness, community involvement, and educational advancement. With the support of government leaders and the UB Foundation, the Graduate Scholarship Endowment Fund is expected to expand opportunities for postgraduate students, empowering the next generation of professionals in Botswana.
Through his participation, Acting President Gaolathe reinforced the message that investing in both human capital and public health is essential for national development.
