Africa-Press – Botswana. Angola delegation that visited the Ramatlabama Artificial insemination centre intends to use the knowledge gained to improve their country’s livestock sector.
In an interview during a tour of the centre on Wednesday, secretary of cabinet, Ministry of Agriculture and forestry, Mr Jao Manuel Bartolomeu da Cunha said they were impressed by the facilities and livestock at the centre.
“We have seen simple facilities, but are very rich in terms of content.
This is a very good school where Angola may come and learn and replicate this back home,” he said.
He said the intention was to come back for more as they now had firsthand information on what they would benefit from bilateral relations of the two countries especially sharing of skills and exchange of knowledge on the beef industry.
Assistant Minister of Agriculture Mr Molebatsi Molebatsi said the tour was a result of a meeting of the two countries’ presidents in the past where they expressed interest in bilateral relations especially in the agricultural sector.
He said they were hosting Angolan delegation to share what Botswana was doing to improve and develop the genetics of her livestock and also increase the national herd.
He said Angola was the biggest buyer of Botswana beef and the foot and mouth vaccine.
Mr Molebatsi said the visit not only afforded Botswana a chance to enhance trade relations with Angola, but also served as a perfect platform to advertise high pedigree bulls bought from Texas earlier this year.
He expressed hope that Angola would import semen of the bulls to develop her local breeds, which they had conceded were of low quality.
Mr Molebatsi said later in the year President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi would lead a delegation to Angola where the two countries would amongst other things sign bilateral relations on various economic sectors including agriculture, forestry, wildlife and tourism.
The tour ended with the delegation visiting a lab where semen is stored, learning how semen was harvested from bulls. The delegation also appreciated the bulls from Texas.
