Africa-Press – Botswana. Diponeng Association of the Blind (DAB) have received white canes valued at P42 000, a donation from CAF America through De Beers Group.

The donation was delivered during a workshop convened by Botswana Association of the Blind and Partially Sighted (BABPS) in Mahalapye, where the association coordinator, Mr Boutlwetse Chabaesele, appreciated government for supporting people living with disability.

He said being disabled did not mean one was unable to produce results because they too were capable of bringing about positive change.

“We are humbled and very grateful for this donation as it will make a huge difference in our lives as virtually impaired persons,” he said.

Mr Chabaesele said because of the Persons with Disability Act of 2024, people living with disability were provided with cards that enabled them to be assisted without any hurdles wherever they went, especially in government offices.

He said since Botswana acceded to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in August 2021, people living with disabilities were receiving equal treatment and such was commendable.

He the white canes would afford visually impaired persons free movement and enable them to be independent.

Mahalapye District Commisioner, Mr Ernest Phiri, commended De Beers Group and CAF America for the donation, adding that it would go a long way in changing the lives of the visually impaired people.

Mr Phiri applauded the government for not discriminating people living with disabilities for they too deserved love and respect.

He said they had the right to land and were to be prioritised especially if in possession of the card which was issued after full medical and welfare assessment.
