Africa-Press – Botswana. Managing Partner at Somolekae and Associates, Attorney Shatani Somolekae, has emphasized that understanding the law is central to the creation and protection of wealth. Speaking during a session with MYGA staff, Ms. Somolekae said that wealthy individuals often rely on legal advice to ensure their financial decisions are sound and compliant with the law.

She explained that forming and preserving wealth requires more than financial acumen. It demands legal awareness to safeguard assets and ensure that wealth serves its intended purpose. According to her, every significant business deal or property acquisition carries legal implications that can either protect or jeopardize one’s financial position if not properly handled.

Ms. Somolekae used the discussion to teach about the importance of having a will. She addressed several misconceptions, noting that many people wrongly believe that wills are only for the wealthy, that only certain assets can be included, or that wills are meant for older people. She clarified that anyone, regardless of age or social status, can and should have a will.

“A will allows you to rule from the grave,” she said. “It ensures your wishes are respected, your legacy is protected, and your loved ones are cared for according to your intentions.”

She further noted that having a will helps prevent disputes and ensures that the right beneficiaries inherit what is due to them. Without a will, assets can easily fall into the wrong hands, and children may lose the opportunity to live the life their parents envisioned for them.

Ms. Somolekae also stressed the need for professional guidance when drafting a will. She cautioned that failing to meet certain legal formalities could render a will invalid in court, defeating its purpose entirely. Consulting a lawyer, she said, helps ensure that all requirements are met and that the document stands up to legal scrutiny.

Her message underscored a broader truth: wealth protection is not just about saving or investing but also about using the law to secure one’s future. By seeking proper legal advice and formalizing their wishes, individuals can protect their assets, reduce family conflicts, and preserve their legacy for generations.
